Land Acknowledgement
Community Living Ajax Pickering and Whitby acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our service locations are located. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that Durham Region, in which our organization operates, forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. It is on these ancestral and treaty lands that we serve our mission to support people with intellectual disabilities to live full lives in community.
African Ancestral Acknowledgment
Community Living Ajax Pickering and Whitby acknowledge those who came here as settlers-migrants either in this generation or in generations past-and those of us who came here involuntarily, particularly those brought to these lands as a result of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and enslavement.
We pay tribute to ancestors of African origin and descent and thank them for their contributions towards transforming systems in ways that promote everyone’s sense of belonging and safety.
The Sankofa symbol has gained significance within the African diaspora as a reminder of the importance of remembering and learning from the past to build a better future.
Mythical Bird: The Sankofa bird, with its head turned backward while facing forward, symbolizes the importance of looking back to learn from the past while moving towards the future.
Egg: The egg, held in the bird's beak or retrieved from its back, represents the knowledge and wisdom of the past that can be used to build a better future.
